A tearful Homage to Nelson Mandela

A tearful Homage  to Nelson Mandela

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” — Nelson Mandela

A rumour of the former President of Nelson Mandela’s death spread  some time ago in the social media after he fell ill. I searched the net to find out facts and watched news channels so that it all should be just rumours. I was happy to see that it was so.  In June this year he was admitted in the hospital and the rumour of his death before his birthday took turn, but the great fighter won over the death and in September came out of the hospital. Today’s news I came to know when I read my mail communication from White House. I said, this must be true as it is authentic. I was shocked and I was in the midst of my training programs and I did not even dare listening to Mr.Obama’s speech on his death. It was a great shock though the news was expected sooner or later due to health condition and his own family’s preparation for his end. In this last few decades I have hardly seen anyone like him in the world. “A True Gandhian” declared Mr.Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India. British Prime Minister David Cameron said "a great light has gone out in the world." “He no longer belongs to us. He belongs to the ages” declared the US President.

His idea of Guerilla war against the white for country’s freedom changed greatly due to the inspiration from none other than Mahatma Gandhi.   His 27 years of struggle in prison cannot be imagined. He is not only the father of modern South Africa but also a great world leader. His speech from the Dock, as it is famously called on 20th April, 1964 is meaningful even today:

“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

I felt as if I lost my friend and a relative. . I have searched my album and picked up a photo which I got snapped standing next to his statue in Madam Tussauds and put it up above. My reaction soon after hearing the news was, “How many such people still live in the world and will the coming days will see any such leaders? Will my own countrymen understand the importance of a great leader Mahatma Gandhi and live the legacy? Will my country lead the light for the world?”. My reactions suddenly turned to my inability to do anything big for bringing such transformation among the youth or countrymen. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, in his death brought the world together in his mourning, but will these leaders realize that it is equality, non-violence and true altruism can only change the world we live in and all wars must end? Mr. Mandela, you will be always live forever in the hearts of   all peace lovers of the world and continue to inspire our lives.

My Appeal to Maoists

In a shocking instance 30 people were killed by Maoists and over 500 attacked in Bustar area of Chattisgargh. The attack was on a peaceful rally by congressmen. It was condemned equally by all. President of congress Party, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi described this as an attack on Democracy. Mr. Advani severely condemned the dastardly attack. He impressed upon the Prime Minister that concerted effort should be made to tackle Maoism and Naxalism with a heavy hand. Mr. Rajnath Singh, the President of BJP pointed out that we must raise above party lines.

In my opinion, we had done not much about this growing problem of naxalism in some of the States, especially Chattisgargh, Andhra, Odisha, parts of Bihar, etc., In a democracy, whatever the reason might be, no one has a right to take away the lives of other. At a time when many human right organizations talk of abolishing capital punishment, this type of activity which is by our own people is not good. I had clearly stated before that I am not sympathizer or supporter of any party. I post this here more as a patriotic Indian who is pained to hear and see the attack on some TV Channels. While such tragic event has happened, many English News Channels were busy discussing about IPL, betting and bookies. Who decides what is important in India is not known to me. If they want they blow up about a rape victim from Delhi ( I had voiced this atrocity too in no less terms and wrote a big document on suggestions to Justice Verma commission and Justice Usha Mehra Commission), while leaving such issues in lesser known places. If we are not bringing out the problems and news about all States and even villages of our country, many youngsters may not even know the existence of such places in our country.

An Appeal to the Maoists:

I request the Maoists to come to the mainstream and to a democratic process as done by Maoists of Nepal. What is in your heart and what do you want to achieve? Please let the people of this country know them. Initially the naxalite movement expressed that they are protectors of downtrodden, Adivasis (Tribes), etc., but your act is other way round!

I am probably not well known but I am for the harmony and well being of the country. I offer myself as an Interlocutor for any talk and can carry it to the government and the people. I am also not afraid to come anywhere to meet your representatives or leaders. Let this story see a good end. Hope, all the right thinking "Patriotic Indians"  will stand by me. I request the Central and State Governments also to take a note.  If  anyone wants contact me in this regard, you can call me on 9840336320. I request the media to pay attention and get the accolade from people as well as popularity by bringing the probably misguided naxals.

Even an 80 year old is not spared. Can Religious Fanaticism help in harmony?

Even an 80 year old is not spared. Can Religious Fanaticism help in harmony?

Please read the news today on "The Hindu": http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/seven-injured-in-attack-on-prayer-hall-in-udupi-district/article4492111.ece

India is a country which I am proud of due to its cultural heritage, peace loving  majority, natural resources, multi language, multi religious and multi cultural people. This is a country of Mahatma Gandhi of whom even the whole world praises. However, there are some vested interest individuals and groups that want to destroy the fabric of this nation. I have not so far written anything about my faith or send "likes" in social media for a picture of "Jesus" or some verses from The Bible. What is my faith has been kept only with me but at the same time never interfered with anyone or anyone's thoughts on their religious believes or pictures posted on the walls of social media such as Facebook. In fact, as I had written words of appreciation for Mother Therasa's work, so have I also appreciated Swami Vivekananda's work in his call to the youth. I have also written obituary to Bal Thackery or to any leader. My mission in this world is to bring harmony and peace among all. If someone does not get it, let him read it again. I did get a threat call fro writing a comment that some who attack nuns and killed innocent  muslims have become leaders too from some unknown caller. I did not even go to the police for a complaint, rather wrote in my page that if he has any issues with me let him write in reply.

As far as the conversion theory is concerned, I have something to say. To preach and practice any religion is the fundamental right under our constitution. Every business advertises their products and is their legal right to do so. In the same way, one might feel that his faith is good and he / she can preach. Say a product such as Fair and Lovely claims fairness in a month can be bought by someone to try or some may not even buy it. It is up to an individual to listen to the preaching of anyone or not to listen also is one's own wish. If a toilet soap can be advertised, why not someone's faith? If there is a problem one faces with a product, there is a legal remedy. One can complain against the advertisement per se or even the product. In the same way, if there is a force in converting any against the wish, then there are existing laws which can come into effect. No religious ritual such as baptism, circumcision or washing with any sacred river can ever change a man against his wish. When the name "Ram" is in the heart of a man what use we get to make him say "Jesus" or by tonsuring his head can we make him a Buddhist? If any such instances are known to any of those misguided friends, let them make out a list of such instances and send to the court. Let the culprit be punished in the court of law.

Raping a nun, asking people not to profess a faith and threatening them with weapons and burning their houses are in no way the ways of cultured persons. At the same time, I request the people of minority to keep calm and to believe in the democratic fabric of this country. They should also know that it is the good and right thinking majority in this country, no matter which religion they belong, have always stood by this harmony are responsible for the peace in this country. Without them probably, the country would have seen a complete genocide of the minorities and I might not have lived to write this blog. While I have hundreds of friends among the minority communities that I have thousands which belong to the right thinking majority community.

Let no one take away the peace and heritage of this great country in the name of caste and religion. Let all the political parties and governments of State and Centre take the situations under control and with iron fist control such barbaric activities. Let the right thinking friends of mine, keep watch and propagate only the love and peace.  Spreading love is more than spreading any religion. If we all say God is love and hate human beings, what use is our religions?

Death of Delhi Gang Rape Victim - Death of values in the Indian Society or a New Birth?

There is a photo making a circulation in social media about a girl whose name is not officially known but many call her Damini, has passed away after a long drawn battle in Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Times of India  call her "Abhaya". Whatever is her name, probably it would become "Anamika" (nameless), if we do not take this incidence into a logical end. This is probably the largest uproar for an individual ever in my opinion, thanks to the media and the people who gathered in New Delhi after the incidence. The country has also witnessed many uproar and even death of a constable. Public anger and many utilizing the opportunity for hooliganism and political parties trying to get mileage over one another, etc., have been witnessed by all of us. I am not going to talk about all of these.First of all let me convey my hearty condolences to her family, relatives, kith and kin. Thanks to the million who are now sensitized hopefully.

We have all witnessed in the past that any uproar stays for a time and then all of us forget. Debates on TV News Channels will be replaced slowly but surely when other issues come up. I had also written in the social media about how many women who were raped and some even lost their lives did not even get any attention by the mass. Many times, if the victims are from villages or are underprivileged, in our country such people are always Anamikas. This had shaken me so much like any other good human would have naturally be. Shouting or lighting candles or writing in social media as one of the posts among many our youngsters post will not change things.

Can we all ponder over what is the need of the hour? Where is our great country which preaches moral values and boasts of thousands of years of culture and tradition going? I have been watching many observations in the social media ranging from request to hang the culprits immediately, to dress code suggested by some men and objected vehemently by some women, especially of young age, to change in laws, etc., Probably everything might have a place for debate (after all in democracy there is place for everything). Some time, we should realize, that we get only lost in these arguments and we go nowhere. Let us do an emotional but wise and practical thinking of the whole matter.

This is not to label all men as some animals, as fathers, husbands and brothers are men too. At the same time, let me tell my fellow men that it is not just wise to accuse all women as our mothers and sisters and wives too are women. An young boy must think, what is the security for his sister who had gone to college and yet to return. My dear sisters, think whether your brother treats other women with respect. When we can all learn universal brotherhood ( if you want to call sisterhood, I do not mind). Honestly tell me, even if the girl's parent in all their agony will not even once pass to think, why my daughter went at an odd time to movie and with a boy? These may not be expressed in anger, but we as parents do think. Dress code is another issue which is not very important now to talk, but I will just mention as incidence. One of my girl students who wanted to take up training at our company asked me over the phone as to what dress code they should follow. I after a smile told her: " I do not advocate any dress code here nor interested in moral policing. However, I can tell you one thing. You can wear anything that you think bring respect to you from my staff or your other students including boys and also from the general public, The public should say how decent and respectable is this girl. What is that dress code, is it pant and shirt or salwar or saree or any modern dress, I will not comment". She promptly told me sir, you have made things clear to me. I do not know why some need to over blow these too. In India there used to be a saying " the girl looks like Mahalakshmi". You can imagine how she would have looked.

There is also widespread opinion that men view women as object of sex and a toy of entertainment. I cannot deny this at all. Who is responsible for this? Men or women, no, all of us. Why we do not object to the ads which depicts women like that? Is not there an "Advertising Standard Council of  India (ASCI)? Here is the link: http://www.ascionline.org/, if anyone cares please go and complain. Also there are women organization who simply blames the men for exploitation of women even in movies and ads. I do not think these women are like the underprivileged and voiceless who cannot talk against their perpetrators  but are rich and have big fan following. Why don't they ask these "ladies and elite group not to indulge in these things?". Please remember I am no male chauvinist and am for the true empowerment of women all over the world. While many women walk on the streets why only some are commented even by a man who otherwise is silent? Of course, one placard during these marches read like this: "even if I walk naked on the road, you cannot rape me". It is absolutely true and if you are a good man and have values and is respected by this society, you need to turn away and walk. Of course, it would have hurt me as I would have sensed the degradation of this society. If it was a woman lying naked due to other reasons, then a right thinking man would cover her with his shawl or even shirt. Are you all getting my point. Yes, that would be the right thinking and mature society. I dream of that. I am also equally sad how a woman can utter that she will be happy to go on the road naked? Even as a man I cannot imagine nor even dream of such behavior of walking naked on the road. Let our thoughts mature so that we can be called mature and we will create a mature society.

Now, I pose the questions to the youth (boys and girls who had been debating on many things). Can you take oath of the following?

Man / Boy: I treat the people of other gender as my equal and respect them and will not insult or hurt physically, mentally or morally. I will genuinely treat them as friends ( if you cannot take a oath saying you treat them as sisters and mothers) I genuinely try to help them as far as possible considering they are physically weak and they deserve my help. I will not induce them or show sexual or obscene gestures. I realize that I am a gentleman and will be seen as a Hero in situations which warrant my help. I will not cheat a girl with a false promise of marriage nor lure her unlawfully.

Woman / girl: I will treat the people of other gender as my equal and respect them and will not insult or hurt physically, mentally or morally. I genuinely treat them as good friends  ( if you cannot take a oath saying that you treat them as brothers and like fathers). I will try to help them when they require. I will not use them for my own petty gains nor induce them with seducing gestures. I realize that men are made strong by God in nature ( you can omit the word God if you are atheist)  and I give the proper respect for that. I will not cheat a boy with false promise of marriage nor lure unlawfully.

I hope it is evenly balanced. When we talk or write anything, about other gender realize that you too have your sisters, wife or mother. Parents have a great responsibility in teaching both the boys and girls. You set an example to them. Then only you will be called a "Mata" or "Pita" as the Indian culture describes and are kept at par with God himself. Society will not develop on its own nor matures unless we all grow and mature.

Coming to the question of how we can control it till the society matures slowly, we have many means such as legal, social, governmental and technological solutions. Laws for sure need to change in many ways. definition of rape,  proper identification of the crime and quick registering of cases and quick disposals are very important. Police should become friends of the public and oppressed but a terror to the wrong doers. Public should also realize they are part of the society. We cannot close our eyes to the constable Mr.Tomar who lost his life.

I had seen thousands on street condemning the cruel act and I put my appreciation for them in writing. However, tell me how many are ready to come together in forming a "Civilian Task Force" who could patrol the areas during night or even become informers to police with the help of police. I do not know whether a system like "Friends of Police" is in place in New Delhi. I made a call for it elsewhere on a social network but no one had said "Yes".

I wonder why registering a case should take much problem for the police. I think there is a misunderstanding of the word "FIR" at both ends, FIR or First Information Report is just registering a "report" about the "Information" obtained by them, no matter whether the information is given by an individual or a group or even a news and is not a verdict nor a proven information. To prove it comes after the police investigation and enquiry and is confirmed and verdict given only by the court. Why they hesitate is not understood and why people should hesitate to go to the police also is strange. Why not technology come to help? We can make complaints filing online. I hope the government will listen to this.

I request all the right thinking people to write your ideas and suggestions to Judge Usha Mehra Commission set up for this purpose, you can send your email to usha.mehracommission@nic.in  or through fax at 011-23093750 latest by 10th of January, 2013. The official site is: http://pib.nic.in/newsite/erelease.aspx?relid=91235
When asked by government agencies or commissions, many times public  reactions are poor. This is the time, all bloggers and social media activists who shout and cry can make their points.

Coming to technology, I wonder why many times we fail to notice the advancements in technology and use them in right way. When smart phones can do so much why we cannot use them or develop gadgets which can alert police when women are in trouble? You can even keep an emergency messaging draft which can be simultaneously send to police as well as your dear and near ones. Also giving out GPRS locations to your family will be of great use. I have ideas for gadgets which can reduce crimes and will write to the government. Let me see whether they are genuinely interested in using such simple cheaper yet powerful weapons to curtail such activities.

Various ways technology can come to help, but change of heart and attitude is the best and better than any technology.

Tribute to Subramanya Bharathi, a Tamil poet, revolutionary and Freedom Fighter.

Today 11th December, is the birth anniversary of Subramanya Bharathi or Fondly called as Bharathiar. his parents gave himn the name Chinnaswamy Subramanya Bharathi. Celebrations of his birthday might be subdued but those who know about him get inspiration by his very name. He was called "Mahakavi" meanss great poet. He was a cartoonist (the first one in Tamil Nadu, I suppose), a poet, journalist, a visionary, a revolutionist and a patriot. I was inspired by his writings even as a child. Though he was born in a so called upper caste ( so called, yes, I do not believe in caste system), he rose against the caste system and even hated by his own people. He was well versed in many languages including English, French, Telugu, Bengali, Hindi, Kutchi, Sanskrit besides Tamil. His series of songs for the babies make us remember why we should mentor them young. He teaches them saying "There is no caste and to talk of big or small is a sin", but even today in the land which boasts of

Cartoon of Subramanya Bharathi by me

him and tradition, the caste system is not abolished!. He was a rebel too. when the caste system which prevented him even to keep a mustache, he did so and was greatly inspired by Bhagat Singh and thus adopted to headgear. He sang several sangs which made the British fear and his writings in Swadesamitran,  a daily of those days. He was in poverty in spite of many  opportunities which he could have grabbed. He fed the sparrows and crows when the household ran out of grains. This saddened his wife Chellamma. Then he sang a song  "Crows and sparrows are of our caste" thus showing his love for animals. Even in such poverty, his prayer was " Having made a good Veena ( a music instrument), anyone will throw it in the dust?. Tell me my goddess, You have made me born with  a bright knowledge; give me a power that I can live fruitfully for this world". These lines had always inspired me and these words have become my prayer too. I am not here to write his biography as many have written that, but to remember a  great man and to inspire the younger generations in his teachings. Now there are many claims that joining the rivers of India is someone's idea but originally Bharthi had put forward it. He might be a Tamil by birth but he saw the whole nation as one. His famous song where he says "In the moon light by river Sind, with the women of Kerala, singing in a beautiful language called Telugu, we will go around in boat". The same song brings out the bravery of Maratha and their poetry and the need to give ivory from the south as gift to them. He was no doubt a true nationalist. Today, we see many leaders living for themselves and making fortune by dividing the people and country  in the name of caste, region, religion and language. Can we all unite? He also predicted the importance of lunar science those days in one of his poetry. He wanted our country to advance in technology too. His song "No fear, no fear, even if the sky has to fall on our heads, we have no fear" will wake up even the weak minded persons. His thoughts on freedom of women is still  not achieved. "We will burn the habit of degrading women" he said but we read and see news about molestation and burning the bride. If we are not going to change our country a better place to live in and a country with pride people, all our celebrations are waste. I want to give this call to all my brothers and sisters of our country, especially youth. How many of you can raise up?   Can we make a commitment today?

Tribute to Milkmen's Angel of India - Dr. Varghese Kurian

Enikkumoru Swapnamundayirunnu"Father of White revolution" Dr. Varghese Kurian is no more. His illustrious career and exemplary life and commitment to  the work he had undertaken cannot be described in a few words. He was born on November 21st, 1921 and as a young man of 28 years he was appointed on government's deputation at the Government Research Creamery. He aspired to be a mechanical engineer but his minor subject which he took in his graduation made everything changed, not only for him but for the whole country.  He saw the plight of the farmers who had to sell milk for lower price and lead a pathetic life. He was the pioneer of the cooperative movement in milk production, procurement and processing in India. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehu himself inaugurated "Amul " Factory in Anand. Then it was the then Prime minister Lal Bahadur Sashtri who asked him to develop similar model for the country and was named "National Dairy Development Board" and made Kurian the chairman.  He won several awards such as Raman Magsaysay  award (1963), Padma Shri (1963), Padma Bushan ( 1966), Padma Vibushan (1999), Doctor of Science from several Universities including Michigan State University, World Food Prize, USA, Lokmanya Tilak award, etc., to name a few. Above is the front page of the book in Malayalam that he wrote, "Enikumoru swapnamundaiyrunnu", meaning "I too had a dream". Now having created the dreamland, he went on to find abode in another dreamland   very far away from this earth.

He was also innovative. While the whole world produced milk powder from cow's milk, he ventured into the production using buffalo's milk. It seems when a Swiss company did not want to share technology with the "native Indians", he retorted to say he too was a native Indian and started inventing his own method to produce the condensed milk in his factory.

Var ghee se of Amul

"Anand Milk Union Limited, the acronym   for Amul owes greatly to him. However, when he wanted to visit them the official red-tape delayed him for hours. He sadly remembers it in an interview that "the very people for whom he worked, has not backed him and went on to say "It is life". This greatly touched me. I too several times did so much good to others in helping or in mentoring the students and even giving free training and spending hours with them but, they behave in thankless way and leave even without a word many times. If such great persons could take it at his stride, so I too need to learn it that way was my after thought. He was called "milk Man of India" by many but I felt he should be rightly called "Milkman's Angel".

Var ghee se of Amul,    is the caption I gave to the cartoon above in line with the famous ads of Amul. Born in Calicut and later studied in Chennai, this great man had made Anand his place of life and died and cremated too there, after all for great men and women where is "the Native place", as the whole Nation belongs to them for which they sacrifice their lives.

Recent Exodus of people of North East from major Indian Cities

I was shocked to read and hear news that several thousands of workers, professionals and students left major cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. The reason: rumours of the possible attach on the people of North East living in these cities after 20th of August. Recently it was also found out by intelligence that doctored videos of torture of Muslim in Assom was going through MMS. South Indian cities and especially Chennai being boasted to be the safest in India could not stop this exodus.

I tried calling my friends in social works and other youngsters through social networks to allay the fear of these people and to say "We stand by you". My plan of going to Railway Station with placards saying "We at Chennai stand by you" failed. My last minute attempt failed. Only my tears could stand by them without even their knowledge.

This is possibly one of the largest Exodus after partition. There is no official number of people who left the major cities, though from           Scene at Bangalore: Courtesy The New Indian Express

Bangalore alone till now about 30,000 persons have left. Police in Hyderabad denies any major exodus though truth will be known only to them. In my opinion in each city around at least 2000 per day would have made it to about 10,000 in the last few days in each city, probably putting it about 1,00,000 from all Southern cities including Pune.

What went Wrong?

What went wrong cannot be found out only from the recent news on SMS rumours and MMS. This exodus is definitely and aftermath of recent Assom Violence. The problem was between the local Bodos and the Muslims, who mostly migrated from Bangladesh illegally. This led to the displacement of about 4,00,000 from their homes. Killing of some Muslims in this violence was used by miscreants - there is a theory of Pakistan's involvement in this- to spread panic in other cities. The affected are probably the ones who had no hand in any violence nor really all belonging to Bodo community. As many in the North used to think  all who live in South India are Madrasis, one community is mistaken for whole North Easters people. Many from Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and   Nagaland were also affected by this mindless rumors. Mumbai protest turned Violence on 11th August, 2012 also added fuel to this situation.

One thing that is clear is that this problem in the North East is now new and all successive governments had done nothing to bring permanent peace in this region. I had written many posts elsewhere for the ending of   11 years of fast by the Iron lady of Manipur, Irom Sharmila. O, that wonderful pristine mounts and nature at best at North East should witness the tears and unrest all these years is very sad. As an Indian I cannot but cry for my brothers and sisters.

Need of the Hour:

What is the need of the hour? The recent news of rumors spreading to New Delhi is not good at all. I do not know whether the Government in the Centre and State governments concerned are taking these issues seriously enough. Someone wrote that these people who go back in pain might turn angry. I do not know what the person meant. it could mean anger against Muslims in their region. We cannot even think of a civil war like situations in India. All right thinking Indians should assure each other of our love, concern and commitment for harmony. All local welfare associations and NGOs should gather the people of North East through their local associations and provide moral support. They should be aided  by the police department.

Religious leaders especially Muslim religious leaders can issue statements stating categorically that India is for all and Muslim brothers should get involved in spreading peace as Islam is a peaceful religion. I personally request my Muslim brothers to join this peace mission. I really loved to see one lone Muslim boy standing at the Railways Station with the placard "We are Indian First and India is for all Indians" in one of the Newspapers.

We need more and more not just right thinking  but right acting people in this country to bring harmony, trust and peace. If your dream is a developed India, you cannot neglect what wrong goes on around you.
I can tell with certainty that India is for all Indians. If someone think that these migrant workers have eaten our resource, let me tell you that the local did not want to work hard or work for less what you paid.

Courtesy Globalpost

Therefore while they benefited from unemployment in their State, others gained by their labor. Colleges and Universities in the Southern States which boasted of providing better education attracted the students from these region and gained economically. Of course these students too had better opportunity by coming down to Southern States. Did we not then see a "Win-win"? There is always a give and take everywhere and everyone of us need to  realize this. Otherwise the Independence Day we celebrated a few days ago is just a tokenism without any meaning.

You can write your opinions here and send ideas what we can all do.

London Olympics - Reflections

The Olympics-2012 in London came to a close yesterday. Sushil Kumar winning a silver medal in the free wrestling competition in 66 Kg category gave an euphoria among all the Indians and as usual the media showered praises and some ascertained how  it was clear from the beginning. His bout with the Kazakhstan wrestler was indeed breath taking. I as an Indian too stood up to give a standing ovation. It was not just for Sushil, for many Indian athletes I felt emotional

Sushil Kumar after the silver medal win - Courtesy India Today        too. When the mother of two and the one from the sidelined  society of North East won a bronze medal, I said "Bravo'. What touched me more was when she said " I am sorry that I could not get a gold for my country".

London Olympics 2012 Badminton: Fighting Kashyap goes down to no.1 seed Lee Chong WeiWhat was more exciting was Yogeshwar Dutt's matches, though he could manage only a bronze. In 60 Kg category he had to win in repechage method after losing to the Russian, Besik Kudukhov in the pre-quarter final. In his bout for bronze he had to show his grit in 45 minutes by facing 3 opponents.  This bronze symbolized valor in my opinion than that of the bronze won by Saina. Yes, we are happy as Indians but to get a medal because of one's injury is not a great thing to celebrate. I know even Saina will approve this observation.

When the contingent of 83 from the Indian continent went to London our media started the hypes. One called the program as "Go for Gold" while the other major channel called it " Gold Rush". True everyone rushed for gold but no one garnered it. The dedicated songs and emotional outbursts are common phenomenon in Indian sports courtesy Indian mass media. Not just hypes but many times promoting a few as the most probables and leaving others.

India's silver medal winner Vijay Kumar poses with his silver medal won in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol shooting event at the London 2012 Olympic GamesThere were controversies in the Tennis arena, as to which team was the probable medal winner. Boppana and Bhupathi had lost to the French pair in a poor way. With the lower rating Vishnu Vardhan did a commendable job along side Leander Paes though they did not win a medal. In badminton all eyes were on Saina but many failed to notice the dark horse, Kashyap Paruppalli. He went down valiantly fighting the No.1  seed Lee Chong Wee.

We often make hype on a few like Sania, Gagan, Vijayakumar, .but fail to notice or encourage others.  Whether the glory we showered during the previous Olympics at Beijing   on Abinav Bindra has become null and void is not known. Tinu Luka's qualification in Quarter finals in 800 meters is no event at all also is not known to me.

Though Gagan's bronze indicated the start of glory for India, the final momentum was won by Sushil and Vijaykumar at the end. As any Indian or even more than many I am happy and proud. Many nights were spent for following these events.

Where is the Gold and the Glory?

With 6 medals in our bag it is defiantly a time to celebrate. With 83 athletes and 13 events and for a country of the size with 1.21 billion, is this enough is the next question that haunts. We had won doubled our tally compared to the previous Olympics is the boast. What if one had one 23 and now another 3 which makes it only to 26 but not double. Two medals can be boasted as double compared to only one. When asked about whether more medals are good or gold is good to Carl Lewis about Indian performance (CNN IBN interview), he said more medals will produce more heroes in India. He was graceful and mature in saying so. As Indians, can we be contented  with our achievements? USA got 110 last time and now only 104 , does it say it performed bad? Last time China topped it and now USA.

Jamaica's 12 medal tally is indeed a proud moment for that country. How can anyone forget "Bolt from the sky" who showed arrogance and boasting in talk but proved so also. Where we can find a Michael Phelp in our country? Is not Serena's dominance  enjoyable by all? The grace of synchronized swimming or rhythmic gymnastics is worth watching many times.  Why certain countries rule certain games? What is our national game? Did you say Hockey? Where is the key to get through a commendable position? If there was a clay medal, for sure Indian hockey team would have deserved it.

When will we stand tall in these games or when we can even host an Olympics? Where do we go wrong?

The Science of Sports: Winning in the OlympicsI always advocate scientific methods and use of technology for the growth of this country. I saw many programs on super humans in the History channel. Whenever, someone claims something or demonstrate feats, they are put to scientific tests such as blood lactic acid acid level, heart rate, muscular movements and so on. Science of sports is not something new. Even a cricket ball use and spins are all analyzed using technologies and the team watches them before taking on the opponents. Do we employ science and technology as much as the developed countries? Do we really talk about balanced nutrition or sports diets? What are our training facilities compared to the developed world?

Here is a link which talks about a book on Winning in the Olympics, by Scientific American. For sure it would be a good reading.

Just throwing money may not be an answer unless one does it scientifically. Being happy is good but worrying and working hard for going to the next stage is urgent and important. Now instead of "Go India, Go" slogan we need to say "Move on India, Move on!"

Ten years after 9/11

Ten years have passed after we witnessed the 9/11 events that shook the world. When I was thinking of writing this blog, I read an exclusive interview of Mr.Obama to The Times of India. I thought it would be appropriate to quote it as it reflected my thoughts too. Here is the part of his interview:

“On this 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we remember that 9/11 was not only an attack on the United States, it was an attack on the world and on the humanity and hopes that we share.

We remember that among the nearly 3,000 innocent people lost that day were hundreds of citizens from more than 90 nations. They were men and women, young and old, of many races and faiths. On this solemn anniversary, we join with their families and nations in honoring their memory.

We remember with gratitude how ten years ago the world came together as one. Around the globe, entire cities came to a standstill for moments of silence. People offered their prayers in churches, mosques, synagogues and other places of worship. And those of us in the United States will never forget how people in every corner of the world stood with us in solidarity in candlelight vigils and among the seas of flowers placed at our embassies.

We remember that in the weeks after 9/11, we acted as an international community. As part of a broad coalition, we drove al-Qaida from its training camps in Afghanistan, toppled the Taliban, and gave the Afghan people a chance to live free from terror. However, the years that followed were difficult and the spirit of global partnership we felt after 9/11 frayed.”

The emotional gathering of people at ground zero and the markings of the names on the tablets, of the 3000 that laid their lives for no fault of theirs was moving my heart. Not long ago what we witnessed at our own capital too only increased my pain. There is a lesion we need to learn from the Americans. The loss of 3000 people made more than 5 million men and women to take up the uniform. It united whole United States of America. Before this anniversary, they saw to it that the man behind this was eliminated. A determination that made them achieve this. I salute this country which stands tall even in calamities. US, I stand by you on this day along with billions of my fellow Indians.

This day, we all need to take up an oath that we will stand for our country and for the united fight against global terrorism. Youngsters should become more responsible and help our security forces and intelligence to fight against terrorism. The government should take serious efforts in combating terrorism. Absence of even CCTV cameras in sensitive areas and non-maintenance of metal detectors and carelessness in securities are unforgivable acts. As written in my previous blog, why that we lack in technology or use of available technology? Can we not develop program which can detect unusual activities and send alarm? I think, a simple program in the camera software could do this. Or is it that bomb sniffing dogs can only do so after the blasts or we have only a few in the country that we need to spare them only for the rarest instances? Can we not recruit more trainers and more dogs as well as recruit more intelligent officers and task force? This in one way, solves unemployment problem and help us combating terrorism too.

TV channels too need to be sensible in reporting news. They can help investigating and then take credit rather than a hurried news which might make sensation but will hinder the investigations.

There is a lot that can be done by the general public. The real heroes will crop up from these unknown soldiers is my strong belief. Compulsory military training to all youth from 20 to 25 years might be the need of the day. Protecting the   whistle blowers is the responsibility of the government.

Our laws too need to change. While the US could just fly into another country and eliminate the terrorist without any legal proceedings, why we keep our fingers crossed on a terrorist who was caught red handed?

Can these lesions and instances unite Indians? Write to me your feelings or concerns or ideas, etc., You can comment here or send me mails with your name, email ID and phone number. If you like send us your photo, so that we can publish them here.

Nation's proud moment

Nation's Proud Movement

The whole nation went into euphoria yesterday. The "Sense of the House Resolution” on the acceptance of Jan Lokpal was unanimously passed by all the parliamentarian shedding their party differences. Some immediately claimed it is the victory for our parliamentary democracy, while there was jubilation at Ramlila Ground that it is the victory for Anna. When finally Shri. Anna Hazare spoke it attributed it to the people of India. This shows the maturity of the leader. The nation had seen many ups and downs during the last 15 days, even before Anna started his fast. Both the major political parties namely Congress and BJP, accusing each other as well as Team Anna finding fault with Government and vice versa. Even US advised the Government to allow Mr. Anna Hazare   to take up the fast. There were skepticism or at least doubts in the minds of many whether things could be achieved this way. The world closely watched India and the development. They thought India might follow the footsteps of what went on or going  on in Libia, Egypt or  Sudan and there could be unrest. We proved them all wrong. Not long ago, even many Indians swore that Gandhian ideas are not relevant anymore. Now is the proof and we as a Nation proved Gandhian agitation works. Thanks to Anna’s untiring fight. While the debates go on in many TV channels about whose victory it is, let us celebrate the victory as ours. Now, the politicians should have learnt a lesion too that they are elected by the people to serve the people and the powers are given to them and not they have acquired by their might. All the while we had been taught that voting is a sacred duty of every Indian, but now we also know our duty to question the elected. If the elected is superior, those who elect them are mighty. This is not to underestimate our parliamentary system which was brought in by our leaders and the law makers who toiled several nights to bring in the constitution. I know some civil activists too talked in insulting way about all our politicians. In the spur of moment all talk some rubbish. It is also a good leader’s attitude to forgive and forget. I request our TV channels, who did give us an yeomen service to bring this movement to the forefront, not to dig the past and accuse some and call names. This is a time to celebrate and a time to move on. As Anna Hazare told the mass, just wearing a cap with inscription “I am Anna” will not make them Anna but they need to keep certain things in mind and he went on to list them out as:
  • There should be no difference in what you say and what you do
  • You should possess clean and honest thoughts, have a clean conduct, clean character
  •  You should have a feeling for sacrifice
  • You should have the strength to take humiliation
  • You should pledge not to give or take bribes henceforth.
While we all celebrate the victory, rededicating ourselves to the cause is important. We need to realize that all of us had a part in the corruption in smaller or bigger way. When I think of my father who was a Superintendent of Central Excise who stood for purity in his work and have not even touched a tea from his clients, I have fallen short in not being so perfect. The pressures of the modern life, the compulsions of the surrounding, political system, etc., are all definitely the reason, yet there is a need for us to stand.  The victory which we got in a non-violent way has taught us that this is the way. We can recall how, many organizations and political parties fought for their rights by burning buses and affecting public life. While celebrating the victory, let us also realize the wake up call given by Mr.Anna Hazare. I wrote many messages in the past few days on many social networks for saving Anna’s life. Now I breath a sigh of relief that everything ended well with a great note. I know fully well, still we have miles to go. This will be possible only if all of us work together and work tirelessly.

Norway Blasts and shoot out- Memorial service thereafter

We as a country which had experienced terror knows the pain of terror. A recent bomb blasts and a shoot out by a freak youth killed over 90 persons. Those who killed in the Utoeya island are all youth. The initial news was that about 7 persons died and several injured in the twin blasts near prime minister's office in Oslo, the capital of Norway. In a few hours, another shocking news came on a man shooting the youth from Labour Party Youth Camp and the youth had very little option of escape routs. Investigations revealed that the man who was responsible is not an Al-Qaeda or any terrorist organization but a Norwegian who expressed his views against muslims, especially those of the immigrants in the country. Why kill these youth? The Labour party seem to support immigrants in the region. Some observes note that this might be the beginning of unrest in Europe. A country like Norway which has never seen terrorism is utterly shocked.

I watched the memorial service for the departed live on CNN, which gave an emotional moment.Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg addressed hundreds of mourners gathered at Oslo Cathedral. He mentioned it was a national tragedy and the youth were known to many including himself. The Norwegian King Harald and Queen Sonja also attended the service and were found weeping during the service. I have not seen many of our leaders seen weeping in tragedies though they make brave speeches condemning the terror. The country responding to the terror with a mass and an attempt in wiping the grief is something worth mentioning. The memorial was labelled "Mass of Grief and Hope". My previous blog on Mumbai blasts talked about our failing hope. Now, it is time that we developed hope and also faced terror with new preparedness. The terror
has become an international phenomenon.

In the era of globalization and mobility, we all need to live accommodating each other, accepting multicultural nature of the world, adjusting among the different races. Otherwise, the world we live will be a grave yard and cannot be a peaceful one. Let us all make this world a paradise to live happily and peacefully. We pray for all the innocent who lost their lives and the families who lost their near and dear ones.

The Blasts that made a hole in our Faith

On the eve of 13th July, 2011, 3 consecutive blasts shook the city of Mumbai again after the shock we had during 26/11 in 2008. Three of the crowded places in Mumbai city namely Zavery Bazar, Opera House and Kabutarkhana in Dadar were the target this time. It took a toll of 19 innocent people and injuring 130 or more. The gory scenes brought out by the news media shocked me. What type of reactions and response that would have gone through  the minds of the people of India could well be imagined. The one that gripped me initially was a deep sadness. Like a mumbaikar, though I am not one, I felt why again Mumbai. After thought made me think, "do we want that other places too should be hit?". Oh, no, we cannot think of these tragedies any more. After an initial sadness, there was a deep anger as many of the mumbaikar expressed in the interviews to the media. When we talk of anger, we have to ask the question, anger on whom. The cowardice of the terrorists to take the innocent life and then hiding from the law is the greatest anger of all. However, there are other genuine angers too: on the inability of the police, intelligence, failure of the local as well as Central government to provide safety to its citizens and the list can extend to National Intelligence Bureau, Home ministry and in particular Home minister or whoever makes a statement at that time trying to politicize the issue or on hospitals which do not handle the situation properly or even on media which is irresponsible in the reporting or making sensationalizing of the gory scenes, etc., And finally the anger should turn on ourselves too for being mute to all and being impotent.

The event for sure has created a hole in the Faith of the Mumbaikar in particular and in all Indians in general. I could see a mistrust among many interviewed and people seem to have lost faith in decent life. Many people were heard saying "we thank God if we safely return home every evening". Thanking God is a good part of course, but the bad part is that we have come to accept this as a reality. Does the government have a strong will in putting a full stop on this?

After all the initial emotions that engulfed me, I started thinking as a scientist and a socially responsible individual. "What need to be done to do away such happenings in the future and what the common man who thinks he has no say in any matters concerning things like this or corruption needs to do" is the biggest question before us.

There are many things that came to my mind. For example the top police officials mentioned that in such crowded places analysing CCTV footage is near impossible. CCTV is no doubt a big boon for finding out the culprit after the blast. Can we stop this on time? When even the children play with compact cameras which have face recognition and smile recognition technologies, can we not develop the technology to find out unusual activities? Fro example, if a person moves around suspiciously for a longer time in the same place, alerts can be sent to the nearest police station as well as the Control Room with the footage or when some one bends to keep some objects, the alerts can be given. Even the cameras can have a capability to focus on persons showing strange behaviours. Did we also consider having cameras that can pick up images during dark nights with IR capabilities? Those with technology capabilities can definitely develop these gadgets easily. I really do not know whether RAW has knowledge on these technologies or they are working on such research areas, etc.,

Can Government initiate to establish an Institute to work on "Anti Terrorism Research"? I do not need to elaborate on the various divisions it needs to have. No subject is unwanted here. Experts from all areas such as Engineers of various kind, chemists, biologists, physicists, aeronautical engineers, mathematicians, forensic experts, psychologists, doctors, sociologists and many others are required here.

"Ammonium Nitrate" has now become a household name after all these attacks. The news that a regulation will be brought about is late though. As a person with the knowledge of plant biology and chemistry I can think of many options. Why at all ammonium nitrate as fertilizer? There are many ammonium containing fertilizers available as well as nitrate containing fertilizers. Also we talk of biofertilizers but could not bring out effective biofertilizers for nitrogen fixing to dissuade farmers from chemical fertilizers. I do not want to go into the details of the problems many biofertilizer industries go through with regulations. Probably my friend Mallikarjun will be able to talk about it more on this subject of biofertilizer industries.

The purpose of this blog is to invite your suggestions. I also want people who can really contribute something fruitfully for this mission. I had been emphasizing on many occasions and in many places about a Civilian Task Force which can raise up to the occasions in the Peace Time Problems of the country. This can be done easily by the volunteers from the civilians. Government could provide necessary help in terms of training and support. I am ready to share my idea too on the structure and functioning of such units. Any takers?

Please do pass on this blog to your friends / relatives or whomsoever who is responsible. Are we not forwarding mails which are superstitious in nature or funny in nature or just for time pass? This is the time, we need to stand up. I express my solidarity with the Mumbaikars at this stage. This is not just about Mumbai, but it could spread anywhere and everywhere. My dear friends, I request you to think, not as someone who knows more but as a weak person suffering from shocks and crying for my nation. Will you not help me and my country?

(World) Cup of Joy

In India cricket is the second religion for many. The incidence in the past few days, created a lot of emotion, expectation, doubts, and brought 1.21 billion Indians on one side. Winning Pakistan was like a great personal achievement for many. At the end of the winning, the whole nation reverberated with applause and shouts of joy along with crackers. Even on a festival like Diwali one cannot hear crackers being burst at the same time by all. That is why probably   they call cricket a religion in India. Finally the long awaited moment came last night. One of the best sides just like Pakistan or Australia, Srilanka was the side to be taken on stride in the final. After 28 years, the history was repeated, and Dhoni's magic weavers earned the distinction of the only team to have won the cup in their own land. The talk on this is going to be continued for days to come in many TV Channels, in many street corners, many offices, many homes. I join the billions in congratulating Team India. A observations made me happy. The whole team unanimously dedicated  the victory to the master batsman Sachin Tendulkar, without taking the credit to themselves. Sachin on his part dedicated it to the Nation. The coach Gary Kirsten erupted with Joy with the Dhoni's winning sixer, as if his own country had won. This shows his involvement in the team's shaping and its winning. I extend my greetings and congratulations to Gary Kirsten too. A good guru is always interested in the welfare and achievement of the disciples and will be happy when they achieve as if the achievement is his own. Many more people have contributed to this win too, such as the ground staff, security forces, medical team, organizers and the cheering    audience.

The greatest achievement in this World Cup is the uniting force that brought the whole India together, irrespective of their religion, region, party affiliation, caste, creed or rich or poor. I have never seen this unity among the whole nation. I wish this unity is kept alive  forever. An after thought too, came  to my mind that why this type of unity is not seen when we celebrate Independence day or Republic day. If our energies are pooled together and work together for this Nation, who can ever beat India? Can we make a committment that in the times of needs, we will raise up, be it in helping the accident victims or helping people during the national calamities or helping the suppressed and oppressed? Can our cup of joy overflow with this committement?

Note: If anyone feels that you make that committment today, say yes or share your thoughts.

Japan, We stand by you..

One of the worst earthquakes and tsunamis seen in the history of mankind had struck Japan last Friday. When we witnessed the shake on TV, the world too shook. Japan, having suffered from the nuclear bomb during the world war, recovered but saw several earthquakes being in the earthquake prone zone. Every time, they learnt a lesson and developed better technologies to withstand earthquakes. Nature proved it is supreme. Shendai is worst hit in the whole episode. Thousands have lost their lives and million lost their homes.

This is a time when there is a need for the whole world to stand with them. Even in the heart breaking scenes, there were a few observations which did not escape my eyes. Within a few days, people of Tokyo had resumed their work. During calamity too, they used restraint and calm. Unlike many incidences in other places of the world, where, people go on stampede for getting food or medicines or fight among themselves or a few go on looting, there was discipline. Another striking thing was their media did not show gory scenes of dead bodies and body parts to create sympathy or cash on the calamity. Anywhere else, media would have done this. I have seen this in TVs including many Indian TV channels. I bow to you Japan. I am sure that you will raise up again. Japan, we stand by you.

In any calamity and untoward events, we are carried away by emotion. A little after thought will raise several issues. If such events recur, what we need to do? Can country like India can take it? The answer is clear that we are not fully prepared for this type of eventuality. This type of event can only be tackled by many expert groups. Government needs to gear up first. Medical and paramedical forces, several types of engineers, police, army, social workers, people to provide food, medicines, water, sanitation workers and the list will go on.

What is the role of civilians?  Civilians need to raise up for the occasion. Training in the areas of first aid, fire fighting, simple rescue methods, communication methods, etc., need to be taught at the school level itself. Involving the youngsters is important. There was a time, Red Cross was active in schools, now it becomes a mere formality. Homeguards were also seen on night patrol and now they are probably the endangered species. Now, we need to realize the importance for raising a Civilian Task Force, who can raise up for the occasion. Can the NGOs, think loud on this? How many altruist persons are ready to stand up for this cause?

Wishes to the women all over the world

Let me wish all the women around the world a "Happy Women's Day!". I would extend my wishes specially to those in the third world countries who are discriminated in the name of gender and oppressed. Even a country like India which boasts that we are already developed nation, has not done much to the underprivileged women. How can any mature person accept female infanticide or a dowry killing?

I know today there would have been quite a many celebrations across our country too. This is the 100th Anniversary which is worth celebrating. Probably many a women would have accused men for all these and cursed them too? I am not here to argue with them. What is the need of the day is more important to us. To be very frank, I do not want to spend much time praising Indra Nooyi or Kiran Mazumdar Shaw or Pratibha Patil, for they have achieved their heights and no one can stop them. I know, in our society there are many privileged women who can achieve great heights and they keep moving ahead and many women's clubs are filled with them. My concern is about the underprivileged and those who do not know what they can and should do.

Very often I see the girls in Biosciences sacrifice their studies for the sake of marriage. About 70% of biotech students are women but among them only about 5 to 10 %  take up a career in biosciences. This is not just a loss for the women but also for the country. It is a type of Brain Drain. All education and money spent on them just go waste. Who is to blame, the students, parents, companies who do not give opportunities or our society as a whole?

On this special day, while wishing all of you, I do wish to give a few advises to the young women. Do not think, that all men are deterrent to your progress. Men and women are just part of the big humanity and they need to go together holding hands to achieve great things for the humanity. Nor, you think that all women who talk big on stages and have organizations which boast to bring changes, are going to help you ( I do have respect for the truly working NGOs who changed the life of many). Probably the men who show true concerns are also your great friends. More than anything, do not expect any sympathy or concessions and someone to come and rescue from the clutches, which many times you had put it on yourself.

Believe in yourself and never think that womanhood is a curse. Also women should know the truth that many a times an enemy for a woman is another woman. Mother-in-law Vs. Daughter-in-law stories still sell even on TV shows but very few times you would have come across Father-in-law Vs. Daughter-in-law feuds. Yesterday's daughter-in-law is today's Mother-in-law and today's daughter-in-law is tomorrow's mother-in-law. Problems are many times due to what the society thinks as right. Illiteracy, superstitions, false religious believes and chauvinism are the cause for the problem.

To my fellow men too I need to give a few advises. Do not think in the same way as our forefathers have thought regarding women. Do not hesitate to be a rebel in opposing dowry even if you need to fight your own family. At the same time, you need not look at a woman treating them like a weakling or who needs your sympathy, but treat them as your equal.

Let us not wait for a society that great leaders and poets like Subramanya Bharathi dreamt of, but help build it.
